Lake Winnibigoshish often called ("Win-nee") by regulars, is one of
Minnesota's Grandest Lakes! It's size is about the size of the entire city of St. Paul!
It is located in Northern Minnesota right in the middle of the state
on Hwy 2 in the Chippewa National Forest and bordering the Leech Lake Indian
Reservation.
The Winnie ponds are a Wildlife Management Area for rearing fish. And
also by the ponds is the Winnie Dam.
. The Winnie Dam is a real neat place to spend some time when in this
area. Only a half hour drive west of Grand
Rapids, MN. You can look down into the water and watch huge Walleye,
Northern, Perch and many other species of fish try to get back up into
Winnie! It's Really a lot fun to watch them! I think they got sucked down
the 8 foot drop by the current of the Dam, and they don't appear too happy
about going down stream below the small 1 foot drop off you see above.
We literally saw 5 - 10 lb Walleyes. 30 of them I bet. Over 200 fish can
be seen in this small area shown above. Sorry.... NO FISHING WITHIN 300
ft. of the Dam! Darn! "Excuse my french!" LOL!
. Across from the Dam is a nice small park with a pavillion and some
activities for the kids...go stretch the legs and have a sandwhich! Look
at the people watching the fish below, it really is a neat site to see.
. The other side of the dam and a beautiful lake shot of Dam Bay on Winnibigoshish.
The outlet current of the Dam - The dark shadows of fish did not show
up well here in this photo, but believe me, they're in there! And they
try scooting up the current and don't quite make it. They put on a good
show!
The Winnie Dam shown above is located on Hwy 9 north from Hwy 2. There
are signs on Hwy 2 directing you to the Winnie Ponds and Wildlife Management
Area.
